Richardson Refutes African Adoption Reports

Nip/Tuck star Joely Richardson has denied reports she is set to follow in the footsteps of Madonna and Angelina Jolie and adopt a baby orphan from Africa. The British actress recently admitted she was considering adoption after visiting an African orphanage. But the 43-year-old claims she came away from the trip with a new perspective about adoption. She says, "I spoke to a woman who works at an orphanage and she said that they encourage as much help and support for the orphanage as we can give, but ideally they like a child not to be taken out of their natural environment. And that stuck with me. "I just think it's about what's in the child's best interests." But Richardson - who has a 16-year-old daughter, Daisy - has praised Madonna's adoption of Malawian tot David Banda and her subsequent fundraising for other Malawian orphans via her Raising Malawi organisation, insisting her selfless efforts are heroic. She adds, "There are exceptions, obviously, as in Madonna's case, when you have a great support system and can reinvest a lot in to a country, the way she has done."

Gyllenhaal And Biel Pulled From Movie Over Missing Money

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel walked off the set of director David O. Russell's new movie Nailed on Friday, after producers failed to show they had enough money to pay its cast. The Screen Actor's Guild will keep all cast members from the movie until the production company shows there is enough money set aside in a union-mandated account. An on-set source tells the New York Times production on the movie is expected to resume this week. It's not the first scandal to strike set of the movie, which was co-written by Al Gore's daughter Kristin - veteran James Caan quit his cameo role last month after a bust-up with Russell.

Cyrte Investments buys Spitfire Pictures

Dutch investment outfit buys L.A. production banner

CANNES -- Jon de Mol's Dutch investment vehicle Cyrte Investments has bought L.A. production banner Spitfire Pictures for an undisclosed sum in a deal with backing from Goldman Sachs and Mediaset.

Cyrte plans to roll Spitfire's activities into new company HS Media alongwith the Dutch fund's majority holding in British production label Hammer Films.

The aim is to create an integrated move, television, sales and distribution company with outposts in L.A. and London.

An HS Media spokesperson said the startup combination company will have access to $100 million for production and aims to make six to eight movies a year, acquire titles for its foreign sales arm and establish a vertically integrated distribution operation.

It will tap into shareholders equity and facilities from de Mol's Dutch fund "to acquire media libraries, brands suited for digital platforms and other complimentary businesses."

Spitfire and Hammer have more than 300 titles combined, some of which will likely be remade into new projects.

Development and production activities will be run out of both Los Angeles and London, with Nigel Sinclair's and Guy East's Spitfire and Simon Oakes and Marc Schipper's Hammer run as one business under two separate brands.

Sinclair and Oakes will serve as co-chairmen and CEOs, the former from L.A., the latter London. East will serve as president and chairman of both the executive board and the outfit's sales and distribution operation.

Schipper has been named COO, with Andy Mayson coming aboard as CFO and managing director of international sales and distribution. Spitfire exec Tobin Armbrust will head worldwide production, and his longtime colleague Alex Brunner will head U.S. operations, both based in L.A.

Cyrte recently partnered with Goldman Sachs and Mediaset in a $5.5 billion acquisition of Dutch giant Endemol.

Natalie Portman - Portman Regrets Big Screen Sex Scene

Actress NATALIE PORTMAN hates a sex scene she filmed for movie HOTEL CHEVALIER - because critics and reviewers focused on her nudity and not the film itself.

The star recorded the scene last year (07), and admits she regrets stripping off on the big screen as her picture ended up on pornographic websites.

She says, "It's not that I regret the film, but it really depressed me that half of every review on the film was about the nudity. It made me think I shouldn't have done it.

"I'm not prudish about nudity. I think it's beautiful in films, and sex is such a big part of life. My issue is that I feel it takes something away from what you're doing when the focus is put on the wrong thing. My picture ended up on porn sites, and that's the dilemma."

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS

“The Age of the Understatement” (Domino): B

Best buddies Alex Turner (of Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (of UK up-and-comers the Rascals) recorded this shockingly good side project during Christmas break. The usual Monkeys’ business of cynical, gritty realism has been replaced by grandiose, dramatic pop in the manner of Scott Walker or cw0nascent Cat Stevens and Bowie. The 22-piece London Metropolitan Orchestra snakes wonderfully around the duo’s rich, harmonious vocals. Brilliant stuff - and it topped the British charts, outselling Madonna and Leona Lewis.
